About the game

Bloomtread is a top-down tank arcade game with a mid-90s, 16-bit soul. You command a small tank and protect your Beacon from waves of enemy armor across four eras: the hedgerows of 1944, the frozen lakes of 1975, the desert of 2005 and the neon drone swarms of 2040.

The Steel Petals club of Daisyfield Technical High plays tank-sport inside KRONOS, a simulator that replays a century of armor. The enemies are holograms called the Grey Ghosts, so nobody gets hurt: beaten tanks dissolve into pixels. Then, in 2040, the simulator's AI, METRONOME, goes haywire and launches its drone swarms.

There is no account and nothing to install. Every cleared stage gives you a password, the 1995 way, so you can pick the campaign up later. Play solo against bots at three difficulty levels, or team up with a friend on the same screen.

How to play

  1. Press Play, then choose 1 Player, 2 Players or Skirmish.
  2. Drive with WASD or the arrow keys (ZQSD on AZERTY keyboards) and fire with Space.
  3. Keep the Beacon safe. If it falls, the stage is lost.
  4. Destroy the red Grey Ghosts to make power-ups appear, then grab them.
  5. Note the password you get after each stage so you can continue later.

What’s inside

  • Four eras, twelve stages and four bosses: the Mastodon, the Dragonfly, the Scorpion and the Hive.
  • New tools in every era: smoke against wire-guided missiles, active protection, an anti-drone cage and a jammer.
  • Skirmish mode with endless waves on random maps.
  • Local co-op for two on one screen, with a shared keyboard or two gamepads.
  • Keyboard (QWERTY and AZERTY), gamepad and touch controls.
  • A crew of four (Iris, Pia, Lou and Nadia) who talk on the radio and react in the HUD.
  • Open it in its own tab to install it like an app and play offline.

Tips

  • Stay close to the Beacon early on. Most stages are lost at the base, not out in the field.
  • In 1975, save your smoke for the moment a wire-guided missile is fired.
  • Ice on the frozen lake is slippery: ease off before you reach a turn.
  • In 2040, switch on the jammer when a drone swarm closes in.
  • The game pauses itself when you switch tabs, so you can step away safely.

Questions

Is Bloomtread free?

Yes. It's free to play in your browser, with no account and no download.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 Players for local co-op on the same screen. Share one keyboard (WASD and the arrow keys) or plug in two gamepads.

How do I continue my campaign?

Bloomtread doesn't store anything. Each cleared stage shows a password: write it down and enter it from the Password menu next time.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. On a touch screen you get a virtual stick plus FIRE, SMK and JAM buttons. Hold your device sideways for the biggest view.

Is it suitable for younger players?

The battles happen inside a sports simulator against holograms. Nobody gets hurt, and defeated tanks dissolve into pixels.
